"And it came to pass, when the evil spirit … was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him."
I Samuel 16:23
Music has an impressive effect on us. This verse lists three results of godly music on the human psyche. First, Saul was refreshed. He experienced relief from mental anguish, and his spirit was soothed. Second, Saul enjoyed the pleasant music. Life seemed good. And finally, the evil spirit was driven away by the godly music.
Music is powerful. It can have an evil effect on us. We can be walking in the Spirit, exhibiting the Spirit's fruit, when sensual songs slam into our souls, beckoning us to walk in the flesh! Music can also have a good effect. God-exalting, spirit-nourishing music refreshes our soul and spirit, gives us enjoyment, and suppresses our fleshly instincts. Like Saul, we can use music to bring peace to troubled thoughts, hope to despairing minds, and light to darkened hearts. Develop a spiritually healthy musical diet.
Pastor Scott Dean
God has been very good to us. We have a tendency to focus on the negative and notice all the things that we lack rather than to see all the gifts that God has given us.
When we experience the vanity that is life without God, do we return to the God who loves us?
Rest comes from rejecting responsibilities that God does not intend for us and accepting God's yoke for us.
The answer to America's social ills is God's grace and Christian love.
