"How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle!"
II Samuel 1:25
In David's eulogy for Saul and Jonathan, three times he remarks that the mighty are fallen.
Few are mightier than those who gave their lives to protect us. When we think of being mighty, we tend to think of strong men who are victorious in battle—the men who conquer others. But the truly mighty are not those who win the battle, but those who give their lives so that the battle can be won.
Tomorrow is Memorial Day. For Americans, Memorial Day is the time that we take to remember those who gave their lives to protect our lives, our freedoms, and our way of life. They gave up what we all too often do not even appreciate. We complain about the traffic. They died so we could be free to travel. We complain about inflation. They died, and our modern economy was protected.
Jesus is the greatest example of might. Until today, His might was most clearly seen in His willing sacrifice on Calvary. He died that we might live. Do we value His death for us.

God has been very good to us. We have a tendency to focus on the negative and notice all the things that we lack rather than to see all the gifts that God has given us.
When we experience the vanity that is life without God, do we return to the God who loves us?
Rest comes from rejecting responsibilities that God does not intend for us and accepting God's yoke for us.
The answer to America's social ills is God's grace and Christian love.
